Location Study
A study in combinations of linear spaces
Engine: Unreal Engine 5

The Assignment
This level was designed AS part of an assignment where we were asked to visit a real-world location and make notes about the relationships between the interconnected, but distinct spaces.
Maps and Planning
I spent the day at the local zoo and took note of how each exhibit was connected to the others. I then made a few molecule maps that represented the spaces with minor modifications to potentially make the organization of space more interesting.
I settled on a linear map with a central area and sketched out a few possible iterations of that concept. The one I landed on was a rocket silo.

Design Goals
My goal was to take the spatial relationships of the molecule map and floorplan and implement them as a nuclear silo that would fit as part of a "dungeon" in a third-person action RPG like Fallout 4.
Enemy placement as pacing
In order to add a sense of flow and pacing to the level, I added placeholder enemies to indicate where combat encounters would take place. This not only helped players get a better feel for how the level would be when mechanics were implemented but also allowed me to draw attention to small but interesting details of the level.
